Middle of Year Testing

Students will be taking middle of the year assessments this week. A few things that will help the students during this week:

1- Sleep
2- A nutritious breakfast
3- An “I can do it” attitude– encourage them to do their best

We really appreciate your help with this! It makes a big difference to your student when they are well rested and not hungry for testing. We want every student to have the best shot possible at performing well on all mid-year assessments.

NOTE: Student health is our top priority. Please do not feel like there is a need to bring a sick child to school just because there is testing. If your child is sick it is best that they remain at home. Testing can be completed when they return healthy and well.

Snacks

We are in need of additional healthy snacks such as, granola bars, fish crackers, fruit snacks, cheese sticks, pretzels, etc. Any donations can be dropped off at the office with a note for "Mrs. Hirano's Kindergarten".

1- TuesdaysSend library books and take-home folders to school. Please check your child's folder and make sure to remove any keep at home papers or Wonders workbooks. What we are learning:

We are now beginning Unit 4 in Language Arts. Below are the power words, oral vocabulary words, letters, and sounds we will be mastering during the next 3 weeks. We have been introduced to all our sound wall sounds and are using our sound wall to help us spell words. We are working on handwriting and continuing to blend sounds to read words.

In math, we are exploring teen numbers. You can help us at home by providing extra practice reading and writing our numbers 11-20. We will also be mastering counting to 100 by 10’s and 1’s. In addition, we are making great progress on our individual math pathways (ask us about the standard we are working on).

We look forward to our science and STEM lessons. We are exploring forces and working to solve problems together in groups. We look forward to completing our forces unit with a visit from Discovery Gateway. They will have several fun force and motion activities for us.

Weekly Update:

1- Tuesdays: Send library books, classroom book(s), and take-home folders to school (please remove keep at home papers)

2- FRIDAY:  Early Out 1:10pm
$1.00 dress down(Student participation is optional. Students are welcome to wear a Quest Spirit shirt with uniform pants or traditional uniforms).

3-FRIDAY: Today you will see a zipper bag coming home with a Kindergarten Progress Report, a book, and possibly other items. The report gives you some specific information you can use to help your child progress. Our standards are listed on the first page with a detailed report of what your child has successfully learned and what your child still needs to work on. In a recent teacher training, we learned that home support is vital to a child's success at school. This one-on-one time you spend with your child is essential and greatly appreciated!

There are some standards in both ELA and Math that we have not covered yet and there will not be a score for those topics. We have included them because they will be coming up after the break and before the end of the quarter.

Your child is beginning to read! They can sound out words and will tap their fingers to help them recognize and blend sounds. Reading with them at home and giving them encouragement will help them continue in this process and become successful readers. I have included a "book feedback" form in the zipper bag. When your child can smoothly read the book without hesitation, please send it back to school in the zipper bag and we will exchange the book for another one.
